Profiles in Certification Success: Jane Hurley, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M., FCPM, FCPA

Jane Hurley, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M., FCPM, FCPA
Procurement Manager
City of Ocala, Florida

In October 2008, Ms. Hurley sat for the UPPCC’s CPPO exam and successfully achieved her CPPO certification.   Jane used NIGP’s Cert Prep Central to prepare for the exam.  The following are her comments about Cert Prep Central and how they helped her successfully achieve certification.

Why did you choose the CPPO Prep course and the online assessment tool?
I believe very strongly in certification and the more resources that are available for study, the better

I found the CPPO prep course very helpful, my first reaction was, "Oh, my God, I have a lot to study!" The 3-day course lays out what you need to know and what you need to focus on - it is very valuable.

What about the online assessment tool and how did this help you?
I took the online assessment toward the end of my study, closer to exam time.  By using the online assessment tool and pre-testing I was able to see my weaknesses, as well as my strengths, and concentrate my studies on my weaknesses.

I would absolutely recommend these tools.  They helped me be much better prepared for the exam.

What is your professional background?
I have been in purchasing for 35 years and in public purchasing for 8 years.  I grew up in New England and worked for a government contractor in Massachusetts, so I did get some exposure to the federal government.  Eight years ago, I moved to Florida and started working for the City of Ocala.  One of the things I like most about my job is the variety. I am never at a loss for things that need to be done, and I enjoy the internal contact and external contact with vendors.

Why did you want to get certified?
I wanted to get certified because I am dedicated to the profession.  Certification provides a core base of knowledge for the profession.  It is important to know the core knowledge which will help you do your job every day.  I encourage and recommend all staff to get certified. My advice to purchasers and staff in general - get certified.

Thank you, Jane, for sharing your experience and congratulations on your recent CPPO certification.  You are a credit to the profession and to NIGP.

Prepare for May Certification Exams

CPPB and CPPO Prep two-day courses are highly recommended for any candidate planning to take the UPPCC exams on May 4-9.

NIGP Website: Coming in March

We're closing the gap between 'all the information that fits' and all the information that's fit.

The new NIGP Website is set to launch in early March with a completely new look and more intuitive navigation.

As your personal membership and professional resource portal, we are incorporating changes that will make you want to have the NIGP site a resident fixture on your computer desktop.

In the last issue of BuyWeekly, we highlighted a few of the changes that will make the site easier to use: industry-standard e-mail/password login* and prominent display of the most frequently accessed sections.

Additional highlights:

•  Search courses by title, location or instructor
•  Member-defined library search criteria to narrow or expand your document search - powered by Google
•  Quicker access to your personal communities of interest

*About one week prior to the launch of our new site, NIGP members will receive personalized login information via email (or as indicated in your member profile).
