                                       Forum Speaker Highlight:

                                                 Patrick Kuhse
                      Internationally Recognized Business Ethics Authority

Patrick Kuhse's personal journey takes him from successful stockbroker with a loving family and home in the suburbs of San Diego, to the jungles of Costa Rica as an international fugitive, to incarceration in two countries and back again. After spending four years in prison, Kuhse devotes himself to speaking to audiences worldwide about the importance of ethical behavior.

Background

Patrick Kuhse became an ethics expert the hard way – by taking part in his own criminal acts and suffering the consequences. As a self-admitted greedy stock broker (“the Jerry Maguire of financial planning”) on Wall Street in the 1980’s, Kuhse’s value system changed, and he became more interested in making money and being successful than in ethical behavior. He rationalized withholding information from clients by believing that he knew more than they did and that they would never know about his indiscretions.

The situation grew worse when a friend asked him to be the investment advisor for the multi-billion dollar financial portfolio of the state of Oklahoma. With his “greed goggles” on, Kuhse agreed with his friend’s idea to illegally bump up his commission.

After a disgruntled employee quit and notified the FBI of Kuhse’s activities, he packed up his family and fled to Costa Rica. His wife and children returned to the United States after three years, but Kuhse remained on the lam for another year before deciding to turn himself in.

After chiseling away his sense of entitlement, Kuhse decided to make things right – he apologized to his children and family, and then to society, where he believes he can make up for his wrongdoing by preaching the importance of ethical behavior.

Today, Kuhse is the ethics fellow for the University of Florida and an ethics fellow for Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Management in Boston.  His presentations share techniques on dealing with moral and ethical dilemmas as well as recognizing the key warning signs and critical thinking errors that lead to unethical behavior and criminal activity.

Visit NIGP 64th Annual Forum and Products Exposition for more information and to register.  If you have any questions, please the NIGP Office at 800-367-6447 x227.

Members: Got A Friend Who's Got Talent?

We are looking for all members to contribute to NIGP’s Friend-Raising Campaign.  Your checkbook is not required – we simply need a couple of minutes of your time.

The NIGP Board wants to recruit the very best leaders into the governance of NIGP through our Friend-Raising Campaign. You are in a great position to identify colleagues and associates within your local area who should be recruited to serve within the NIGP committee structure. Ideally, these persons have already demonstrated leadership qualities within the local NIGP chapter affiliate, their public agency, and/or their local community.  All you need to do is send the name, agency and email address of your friends to executive@nigp.org.   There is no limit to the number of friends you can submit for recruitment.

NIGP will do the rest. We’ll send a recruitment letter to your friends – inviting them to volunteer their leadership and service to the profession. They will be asked to complete a short bio of their past experiences as well as an inventory of their skills and interests. This inventory will be used by the appointing official or group on an on-going basis to match interests with volunteer opportunities in committees, councils, and task forces.  The matching process should result in a more relevant and meaningful experience for the volunteer and a more focused committee structure for the Institute.

At a time when both travel dollars and time commitments are precious, the NIGP Board has responded with a new committee structure that will engage more members into leadership and governance because (a) there will be added opportunities to create short-term task forces and project teams on an as-needed basis; and (b) some groups will not be required to travel to onsite meetings.  So, please contribute today to the Friend-Raising Campaign!

NIGP Board: A Reprieve From Elections

Every spring, NIGP has conducted elections for NIGP Board seats that will expire in June.  However, the NIGP Bylaws and policies were modified in 2008 to change the terms and term limits for Board members.  Rather than a shorter, two-year term with two renewal periods (for a total of six years), the decision was made to provide a longer, three-year term with one renewal (again, for a total of six years).  The longer term provides greater continuity on the Board because the potential for annual turnover is reduced.

Due to this change, there are no Board seats that are subject to an elections process in 2009.

A potential of five Board terms will expire in June 2010 and the nominating process for these Board seats will be initiated next fall 2009.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Rick Grimm, CPPO, CPPB, NIGP’s Chief Executive, at 800-367-6447x235 or at rgrimm@nigp.org.
