GO PRO: Celebrate Your Value During Purchasing Month
Get ready to celebrate Purchasing Month during the month of March! This is your month to be noticed for the tremendous service you provide to your agency and your community.
Events and Activities
The events and activities you host during Purchasing Month promotes the importance of our profession. Take this opportunity to plan and implement activities in your area that embrace your whole department, agency and community.
Below are just a few ideas to get the brainstorming started in your department or local NIGP Chapter.
• Encourage your local government leaders to proclaim March as
Purchasing Month.
• If you’ve already obtained a proclamation, see if you can get it renewed
and/or announced again.
• Make a presentation at your community colleges or universities about
choosing Purchasing as a profession.
• Send a press release to your local press on all the activities
happening in your area.
• Partner with other agencies or your chapter to generate a public event.
See if you can find sponsors to offset costs.
• Make sure your agency knows that March is Purchasing Month by announcing
it at your staff meetings; sending a notice of events to your HR office and
to your boss.
• Generate a fund-raising activity for a local charity or scholarship fund
that lets the public know who you are and why you care.
• Hold events in your department every week. They can be as simple as having
a “P” day where you have popcorn and purchasing bingo in the afternoon,
a pizza party, and Peach or Pistachio ice-cream to something more
complex like a scavenger hunt.
Get involved and plan for some fun!
If you need any assistance, your National staff is here to help. Please contact us at PurchasingMonth@nigp.org.

Inside NIGP: Michael Romero Earns CEM Certification
Congratulations to NIGP Events Registrar, Michael Romero, who recently earned his CEM (Certified in Exhibition Management) certification! This designation is recognized throughout the events industry as the premier mark of professional achievement and is offered by the International Association of Exhibition & Events (IAEE). To earn this certification, Michael had to complete a nine-part program and a nine-part exam within three years. He was able to take all of his required courses in a face-to-face environment in several locations across the country.
Michael joined NIGP in July of 2001 as an intern assistant. Today as the Events Registrar for the Meetings department, MIchael plays a vital role at NIGP by providing registration services to Forum exhibitors and NIGP seminar attendees. Some of Michael's accomplishments include updating the seminar registration information on the Website, promoting the Government Contractor Certificate program and courses as well as initiating the Exhibitor newsletter. In 2007, Michael received NIGP's STAR employee recognition for his valuable support of our members, constituents, and staff.
Michael views this certification as a show of his commitment to the industry and he looks forward to achieving other professional certifications.
Congratulations Michael!

Green News: EcoLogo Certification Awarded to Georgia-Pacific...
For a Selection of Tissue, Towel and Napkin Products
EcoLogo, North America's most respected and established multi-attribute environmental leadership standard and certification mark, announced the certification of a broad selection of Georgia-Pacific Professional's tissue, towel and napkin products.
"We are thrilled to welcome Georgia-Pacific Professional into the EcoLogo Program. In being awarded EcoLogo certification, Georgia-Pacific Professional has decided to have its long-time commitment to environmentally-preferable products recognized by a credible, third party," says Scot Case, Executive Director of the EcoLogo Program.
To be awarded EcoLogo certification for its tissue, towel and napkin products, Georgia-Pacific Professional had to meet stringent criteria addressing environmental issues such as recycled content, energy consumption, aquatic toxicity, emissions and waste. The standard is based on a multi-attribute lifecycle approach.
The EcoLogo Program is designed to support a continuing effort to improve environmental quality by reducing energy consumption and by minimizing the impacts of pollution generated by the production, use and disposal of goods and services. In a skeptical marketplace, EcoLogo builds the trust needed by providing scientific credibility and proof of environmental leadership.
